The MySpace Music team is working around the clock to duplicate your imeem playlists and make them available to you on myspacemusic.com as soon as possible. In the coming weeks, we will be emailing you with instructions on how to claim your playlists on MySpace Music, using your MySpace login. If you don’t have a MySpace account you can sign up for one here.

Original Article: MySpace announced today that it has completed a deal to acquire "certain assets" of the popular social media music service imeem. imeem is now redirecting to MySpace Music.

"MySpace Music and imeem share a common vision and commitment to further enabling the socialization of content across the Web," says MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta. "This deal will allow us to leverage imeem’s industry leading technology and over time, meaningfully integrate their products into the MySpace Music experience."

"Since its inception in 2003, imeem has built a highly engaged music community of more than 16 million users worldwide," says Van Natta. "imeem helped pioneer the ad-supported digital music model and created the Web’s first embeddable music and video playlists enabling users to embed songs and playlists virtually anywhere on the Web, including MySpace."

MySpace will be taking on imeem CEO Dalton Caldwell, CTO Brian Berg, COO Ali Aydar and VP of Sales David Wade as consultants to help manage the transition. Financial terms were not made available in the announcement. Mike Arrington says it’s less than $1 million.

MySpace says that in the coming weeks, they will be working as quickly as possible to take aspects of imeem and migrate them to MySpace Music. The company says they’ll be working to offer users the imeem playlists they created.

Facebook, MySpace May Share Content

October 27th, 2009 Open Admin No comments

Never mind swine flu – it may in fact be time to start watching out for flying oinkers.  Social networking archrivals Facebook and MySpace are discussing the idea of sharing content, according to people at the highest levels of both organizations.

On Facebook’s side of things, Sheryl Sandberg, the company’s COO, told Emma Barnett, "Facebook is focussing on building the best technology which helps people share content, while at MySpace they are focussing on more a content-led strategy.  We would like to have their content, as we already do with many other sites, shared across our network because it is good for our users."

Then, sure enough, Owen Van Natta, the CEO of MySpace, also contributed a quote.  "We are in talks with Facebook, and other sites, about how we could partner with them," he said.  "Partnerships are going to be a big part of our strategy moving forward as a lot of value can be derived from them."

So, although nothing’s been agreed upon, this isn’t scuttlebutt being circulated by the mail guy and an intern.

In fact, this is a fairly major development that could be taken as weakness on either side’s part – either Facebook worrying that people will jump ship to MySpace, or MySpace thinking that this is its best chance to get eyeballs – but a properly implemented partnership should benefit everyone.

It’ll be interesting to see if Facebook and MySpace can set aside their competition for users long enough to pull it off.

Report: MySpace To Get Expert New Ad Sales Head

August 20th, 2009 Open Admin No comments

The rate at which MySpace makes money may soon increase.  According to a fresh report, Wenda Harris Millard, who’s earned quite a reputation in the marketing industry, is set to try her hand at moving ad space.

Wenda Harris MillardKara Swisher wrote earlier today, "[W]ell-known online advertising sales executive Wenda Harris Millard (pictured here) – who is now president of New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy, Media Link – is poised to take over all advertising sales at MySpace, sources said."

As for where Millard will fit into MySpace’s organizational structure, Swisher wrote that she "will apparently report to MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta directly. . . .  In turn, all regional advertising vice presidents at MySpace will report to her."

This development should represent quite a win for MySpace; doubters need only check an abbreviated bio.  Millard got her MBA from Harvard, was a founding member of DoubleClick’s executive team, and held high positions within Ziff Davis.  She’s also worked for Yahoo and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

Millard’s hiring may in fact be what Owen Van Natta referenced yesterday when he promised "continued news about great talent coming to MySpace."

MySpace May Acquire iLike For $20M

August 18th, 2009 Open Admin No comments

MySpace has been doing rather well on the music front in recent days; this month, it’s debuted a Heath Ledger-directed music video and some Pearl Jam songs.  The site may soon chalk up another win, too, as one report indicates it’s about to make a significant acquisition.

Michael Arrington writes, "MySpace is close to acquiring popular social music service iLike, we’ve confirmed with multiple sources.  The deal, which should close this week, will be MySpace’s first acquisition since new CEO Owen Van Natta took control of the company in April 2009.  The price is ‘around $20 million.’"

Since iLike has raised $16.5 million in funding since getting started in 2006, that sounds like quite a bargain.  What’s more, iLike has ties to Facebook, Bebo, and Orkut, and claims to have over 50 million registered users, so MySpace might be getting a lot of "ins."

As for what sort of people are involved, the founder of MTV, a Clear Channel SVP, and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla are members of iLike’s advisory board, so MySpace seems to be receiving an implicit nod from some pretty important folks.

We’ll be sure to provide additional details as they become available.

MySpace Trying To Get Their Act Together

July 21st, 2009 Open Admin No comments

"…simplifying and unifying our site is fundamental to our success going forward. MySpace should feel like one platform – not 15 sites loosely stitched together. We consider our diverse content offering a strength but too many logos and disorganized verticals makes the site difficult to navigate and creates confusion about our brand identity.

Our users don’t know if we’re a social portal, a music site, or an entertainment hub."

Subject: Organizational Update

Hi everyone,

As we continue to evolve our organization there are some changes I’d like to update everyone on.

After nearly two years of managing MySpace’s product organization, SVP of Product Tom Andrus has decided to explore other opportunities. During his tenure at MySpace, Tom brought a level of professionalism to the product organization and established a true discipline of product management. He helped create a dynamic, top notch team of product talent responsible for managing one of the biggest platforms on the planet. I personally appreciate all the support that Tom has given the new management team and look forward to welcoming new talent to compliment the tremendous group we currently have in place. We expect to see incredible things from Tom and wish him the best in his future plans.

After more than three years running MySpace’s international business, MD and SVP of International Travis Katz has decided to leave the company to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities. Travis joined News Corp in 2004 and was one of the principal authors of the company’s digital strategy, which led to the creation of Fox Interactive Media and the acquisitions of MySpace and IGN among other sites. In February, 2006, Travis joined MySpace to lead the company’s international expansion, and under his leadership, MySpace grew its international user base from 12 million to more than 60 million active users. Travis leaves as a friend to MySpace and to the executive team – we wish him and his family the best of luck in future endeavors. Travis will remain with the company through the end of August to help with the transition.

International will continue to be a major priority for MySpace going forward and I’m proud to announce that Rebekah Horne – formerly our GM of Europe and Australia – will be taking over as MD and SVP of International. During her tenure at MySpace, Rebekah has done an incredible job inspiring and leading teams across Europe and the rest of the world. Rebekah spent last week in LA working with us on strategic planning and this week I plan to join her in London to meet with our leadership team in Europe. Please join me in congratulating Rebekah on her new role.

As I’ve said before, simplifying and unifying our site is fundamental to our success going forward. MySpace should feel like one platform – not 15 sites loosely stitched together. We consider our diverse content offering a strength but t oo many logos and disorganized verticals makes the site difficult to navigate and creates confusion about our brand identity. Our users don’t know if we’re a social portal, a music site, or an entertainment hub. In the last week, we’ve made some small but meaningful site changes that will lay the groundwork to provide more clarity on our brand and business. Unifying MySpace is critical to how we define ourselves to the world. We’re beginning to start this process and I’d like to introduce two major hires to the product organization.

Please join me in welcoming Katie Geminder, our new SVP of User Experience and Design. Katie began her career designing user experiences at Amazon, where she led large cross-functional and customer experience initiatives including the Amazon.com Kitchen Store, Target.com, and the Amazon Services e-Commerce platform. Since then she has worked for top online and technology companies including Apple and Facebook. For Katie, great user experience and design lives at the convergence of product, engineering, and design. A great user experience is dependent on two things, a clear and concise vision augmented by user feedback and the collaboration of business, product, technology, and engineering teams.

Improving our product interface is a major component of creating an exceptional user experience. With that, I’d like to welcome Mike Macadaan as our new VP of Product. Prior to joining MySpace, Mike served as Vice President of User Experience at the start-up publishing network Tsavo Media. Mike is a fixture in the start-up scene as the founder of Twiistup, an industry standard startup showcase. At AOL, Mike led the team responsible for creating Magnet, the company’s groundbreaking first effort at personalization and behavioral targeting, which gave AOL an in-depth look at the needs of their users. At MySpace Mike’s job is to push, inspire, and lead the product organization. He’ll be responsible for developing next gen experiences that will reset the growth for MySpace.

Finally, we’ve spent the last few weeks designing a framework that provides tremendous clarity to the way in which our product and technology teams will be working together moving forward. Next week, Jason and Mike are going to walk employees through the new team structure of our technology and product group. I appreciate the input from everyone across the company that has helped develop this architecture.

Thanks,

Owen
