Link Building for Bing Rankings: Dos and Don’ts

December 1st, 2009 Open Admin No comments

It’s easy for businesses to get caught up in Google’s expectations for their sites, when trying to market through search. That’s certainly a wise thing to do, considering Google dominates the search market by a huge margin. Still, there are other search engines that people are using, and it is also wise to make sure your site is performing to the best of its ability in those too.

I’m obviously talking about Yahoo and Bing, but Yahoo’s share is declining, while Bing’s is gaining. Furthermore, if the deal between Microsoft and Yahoo goes through, Bing search will be talking over Yahoo anyway.

Do you take Bing into account when optimizing your site? Comment here.

Rick DeJarnette We don’t hear as much about what Bing wants out of a site for rankings, but Rick DeJarnette of Bing Webmaster Center has shared some dos and don’ts of link-building for Bing. Not surprisingly, a lot of his advice for honoring Bing’s policy, does not differ too much from advice that Google would give you. It is, however, still always nice to see how they feel, just to clear up any possible confusion.

Like Google, Bing places great emphasis on quality links to determine its rankings. "Just don’t make the mistake of believing it will result in instant gratification. Successful link building efforts require a long-term commitment, not an overnight or turnkey solution," says DeJarnette. "You need to continually invest in link building efforts with creativity and time."

What Not To Do

DeJarnette shared a list of things that you should avoid in your link building efforts, if it is a good Bing ranking that you are after. Here is what Bing says will get your site reviewed more closely by staff:

1. The number of inbound links suddenly increases by orders of magnitude in a short period of time

2. Many inbound links coming from irrelevant blog comments and/or from unrelated sites

3. Using hidden links in your pages

4. Receiving inbound links from paid link farms, link exchanges, or known "bad neighborhoods" on the Web

5. Linking out to known web spam sites

"When probable manipulation is detected, a spam rank factor is applied to a site, depending upon the type and severity of the infraction," says DeJarnette. "If the spam rating is high, a site can be penalized with a lowered rank. If the violations are egregious, a site can be temporarily or even permanently purged from the index."

What To Do

DeJarnette also shared some tips for getting more quality links. Following are Bing’s tips for effective link building (paraphrased):

1. Develop your site as a business brand and brand it consistently

2. Find relevant industry experts, product reviewers, bloggers, and media folk, and make sure they’re aware of your site/content

3. Publish concise, informative press releases online

4. Publish expert articles to online article directories

5. Participate in relevant conversations on blogs/forums, referring back to your site’s content when applicable

6. Use social networks to connect to industry influencers (make sure you have links to your site in your profiles)

7. Create an email newsletter with notifications of new content

8. Launch a blog/forum on your site

9. Participate in relevant industry associations and especially in their online forums

10. Strive to become a trusted expert voice for your industry, while promoting your site

Most of the stuff DeJarnette shared is nothing any savvy search marketer is not already aware of. That said, there are clearly plenty of online (and offline for that matter) businesses out there that don’t have savvy search marketers on the payroll. It can be quite helpful when a search engine itself lays out what to do and what not to do to help webmasters get better rankings.

I Have A Web Site Now What?

October 30th, 2009 Open Admin No comments
Are you one of those business owners that took the time to build a Web site and now ready to sit back and ready to reap the benefits? If you are you are, then you are in for a rude awakening. Building a Web site is only the first step in a journey with many miles.

Just because you have built a Web site, it doesn’t mean anybody will ever come to see it. A Web site is like any other marketing tool. If you don’t get the word out about it, nobody will know it exists.

The funniest thing of it all is the first who need to know about your site are not human beings. Oh no, they are robots. If you prefer living things, you can call them spiders. Spiders are working for the search engines like Google and Yahoo. Without the spiders visiting your site the search engines will never get to know your Web site. These spiders are not your normal eight legged creatures. They can read your Web content, evaluate your links, and index and categorize your site.

Once the spiders came, they’ll be back. It is not a one-time visit. Spiders return more-and-more often. The more often the spiders return to your site the more important they think your site is.

To get the spiders to pay a visit to your web site sooner you should build links pointing to your site from other related Web sites. When a spider visits another site with a link pointing to your site it then visits your web site too.

There are many ways to get links pointing to your site. You can contact other Web site owners to exchange links. You may write articles related to your products and services and posted in article directories. You may contact bloggers to pitch your products or services. You can submit your site to search engines, and list your site in online directories.

There are many ways to get visitors to your site. The most important concept to realize that building a Web site is only the beginning of your online marketing campaign.

Google Utilized to "Make History" for 9/11 Remembrance

September 12th, 2009 Open Admin No comments

Google has been criticized by some in the past for not featuring 9/11 doodles on the home page on the anniversary of the attacks on September 11th. Google is, however, pointing to a site from the company’s official blog, that invites people to "share their experiences of 9/11 and its aftermath in an effort to preserve the memories of that time."

The site is called Make History, and utilizes Google Maps Street View and Google’s App Engine. People can submit their photos/videos of the site of the World Trade Center attacks, the Pentagon, and the site of the Flight 93 crash, as well as their stories.

The site was created by the National September 11th Memorial & Museum in partnership with design firm Local Projects

Bing and Ask both have up 9/11 memorial images, and there is an iPhone app called 9/11 Numbers (via RWW).

Do you need Dedicated IP when hosting your site ?

August 18th, 2009 Open Admin No comments

Many of us who is still beginner in web hosting industry didn’t really know what is Dedicated IP/Static IP and does it really important to have dedicated IP for your site ?. And is there any difference between having dedicated IP and shared IP. In this article, I will try to explain and elaborate as much as possible so you can have better understanding and decide whether you really need them.

As the IP Address is getting harder and harder to get, most web hosting company doesn’t offer dedicated IP to their hosting account. So basically when you host your site with them, you are sharing your IP Address with other web site and one IPaddress is normally shared by hundreds or even milion sites.

Then, the question is , how does it work, how did it knows how to load my site and is there any performance issue when your site IPAddress is shared between other web site?

The answer is that all the web request is handled by Web Server, and the webserver will load the your site based on the host header or virtual host name that your site is configured.

For example if the web server has 5 website and all sharing one IP, then the Network Admin has to configure host header or virtual host that is unique to your site such as www.yourdomain.com to your site.

And there is no performance benefit on using dedicated IP over shared IP. It all depends on your hosting provider bandwidth.

So what is the reason why people want dedicated IP?. The main reason is if you planning to use SSL on your site, then you need dedicated IP.If not then either static IP or shared IP doesn’t make any difference.

Social Media Tapped to Find Missing Louisville Man

August 6th, 2009 Open Admin No comments

A man named Robert Botts from Louisville, Kentucky has gone missing, and those who know him have taken to social media to help them find him. He’s been missing since Thursday, July 30. His car was found abandoned at an intersection in Louisville.

A photo and physical description have been posted on the social publishing site Scribd.

Missing Person

This is being shared around other social networks like Facebook and Twitter in hopes that someone will be able to help find him.

They have posted the story to iReport, the citizen reporter site that CNN uses stories from, although CNN has not picked this one up yet.

We often talk about the marketing and business benefits that users can get out of social media, but stories like this remind us that there are far more valuable uses.

This is not the first time social media has been called upon to find missing persons. For example, earlier this year, a father began using it to try and find his missing daughter after 20 whole years. She had disappeared from Gainesville, Florida in 1989. There were no amber alerts or web sites displaying her picture or anything, but he set up a site at TiffanySessions.com. He counts YouTube among his social media resources.

The viral nature of social media provides hope for friends and family of missing persons, and if it can work for marketing products, there is reason to believe it can provide value for something of real importance. Spreading the word is crucial though. You’ll find some sharing options below. Share where you have friends/followers.

Google Warns Users Of Google Scams

July 14th, 2009 Open Admin No comments

Google is warning users about an increase of spammers promoting Google scams.

“We’re seeing disturbing cases in which websites, emails and advertisements claim that you can make large amounts of money from home with very little effort using Google products and services,” the company said on the official Google Blog.

Google Blog Header

“They’re designed to look like they were written by a regular person, just like you, who stumbled across an amazing opportunity to make their monetary dreams come true. What they don’t tell you clearly is that Google is not affiliated with these sites and that they may add extra charges to your credit card or misuse your personal information.”

Google has offered users a number of ways to report such scams.

If you’ve been ripped off, or suspect others are, report the site and file a complaint with the appropriate agency.

If you come across many sites with duplicate content or common templates intended to direct users to the same product or scheme, please let us know with a spam report

If you’ve been contacted to place suspicious links on your site for money, let us know with the paid link report form

If your site’s forums or comment sections have been spammed with fake offers of fabulous financial gain, you may need to take steps to fight comment spam. Spammers will take advantage of any user-generated content sections of your site, and will even generate thousands of fake user profiles to try to slip under the radar.

If you receive suspicious messages that claim to be from Google, these may be phishing attempts. Please report them to phishing@google.com

Free Web Hosting Service – No Ads

July 9th, 2009 Open Admin 1 comment

If you are just starting your own web site and don’t expect too much traffic to your site, then noadz.biz is for you. In addition if you want a free web hosting service that doesn’t come with the typical pop-up ads, banner ads or whatever form of ads, then you should probably considering hosting your site here too. However the total space, about 50MB, and monthly traffic, about 150MB is quite small comparing with other web hosting services such as the 1GB bandwith by Doteasy Technology . Yet the free web hosting service do come with handy features for web masters such as PHP support as well as SSI (Server Side Includes). There’s no limit to upload file size but considering the small web space this feature probably doesn’t really matter much.

Here’s a summary of the features from noadz.biz

  1. Price: $0
  2. Space: 50MB
  3. Bandwidth: 150MB
  4. PHP
  5. SSI
  6. No upload limit
  7. Control Panel

Websites and User Friendly Web Designs

July 8th, 2009 Open Admin No comments

FIVE SECONDS… that’s how long you have to capture the attention of a website visitor. Does your website engender trust, credibility and reliability within 5 seconds? Site visitors are impatient people seeking immediate gratification … they want to ooh and ahh … even before the page is fully loaded.

I’ve been designing websites since 1995, in the hey-day before Google, Yahoo and Web 2.0. The one thing that has not changed is the user; they want their information faster. If they have a 28K modem, they want the information at the speed of 56K. If they have DSL, they want it to load at cable modem speeds. A Web Designer has to take this into consideration when designing a site. At the same time, they have to create a site that captures the attention of the visitor and prompt them to interact with the site, and even buy something or fill out a form (the goals of the website).

User-friendly web design always begins with the visual effect.

COLORS

Colors are a “primary” factor. Most sites are designed with a white background and black fonts. This combination is eye-friendly for a comfortable reading environment. Eye strain is a definite no-no. If you want your visitors to read text, make it as easy as possible … that starts with the right color combination.

The obvious potential exception would be an entertainment site with a high reliance on multi-media video and photos. Different color combinations may be desirable here for emphasis and enhancing the entertainment value of the site.

The Psychology of Color

Check these 3 sites out for great insights on how psychology and color work together:

1. http://www.squidoo.com/colorexpert
2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_psychology
3. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/colors1.html

Entertainment sites are about emotion, passion, energy, enthusiasm. Colors to be used are always strong. For instance black is used for Power and Authority while red is used to evoke passion, high energy and enthusiasm.

A business site, for instance a mortgage company, should not use the color scheme I suggest in the entertainment sites. Here I use blues and greens as these colors evoke trust, peace of mind and a sense of calm. The visitor is considered to be nervous entering the site because they are making a decision about pretty important things like their home, their money and their overall finances. They need someone they can trust.

LAYOUT

Layouts begin and end with simplicity. Make the site complex with a lot of so-called “features” and you will lose a great deal of your audience.

With layouts, “less is more” … the fewer feature or complexities, the easier it is for the visitor to understand your message and “engage.”

It’s always a good idea to check out your competition and see what it is you actually like about their website … view it as a customer not just a competitor … it can be a useful experience.

Always keep in mind the ultimate goal of your website … what is it you want the visitor to actually do … your layout should reflect the shortest distance between the first impression of your website and that ultimate goal you seek.

Additional Key Considerations

1. Simple Site Navigation is a must. Your visitor has to be able to move through the site quickly and in a logical sequence that they have become used to when visting other websites. They want their info fast and if your navigation goes against the generally accepted conventions of navigation, the visitor will move elsewhere.

2. Make your paragraphs easy to read… organize your information well by highlighting lists by number, symbols or bullets.

3. Look throughout our site and see that paragraphs are not just streams of uninterrupted text. The words, sentences, paragraphs et al are woven together through a structured hierarchy of organizational enhancers that make it easy for the visitor to read and understand and engage.

4. Don’t try to crush your competition with an overwhelming advantage in website features. Remember the Panasonic slogan … “just slightly ahead of our time”… keep this in mind here. Keep your “competitive bullets” in your gun and holster until they are needed. For instance, if your competitor doesn’t have a newsletter sign-up, add it. If they respond by adding one, consider adding a click-to-chat feature and so on and so on.

So, website design is about gaining the attention of the visitor through strong use of color, content, ease of use and navigation. Most of all … KEEP IT SIMPLE!
